MORE INFO ABOUT FOR YOUR HP CALCULATION
In the world of air conditioning, BTU is the most important number you’ll see on a spec sheet. It determines whether your room will feel like a cool sanctuary or a humid, warm box.
What is BTU?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. Technically, it is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. In the context of air conditioning, BTU measures cooling capacity. Instead of adding "cold," an air conditioner removes heat from your room and dumps it outside. The BTU rating tells you how much heat the unit can remove per hour.
Common BTU to HP Conversions (Malaysia Standard)
In Malaysia, we often talk in Horsepower (HP), but the machine's actual power is measured in BTU. Here is the general rule of thumb:
| Horsepower (HP) | Average BTU Capacity | Recommended Room Size (Approx) |
| 1.0 HP | 9,000 – 9,500 BTU | 100 – 150 sq.ft (Small Bedroom) |
| 1.5 HP | 12,000 – 13,000 BTU | 150 – 250 sq.ft (Master Bedroom) |
| 2.0 HP | 18,000 – 19,000 BTU | 250 – 400 sq.ft (Living Room) |
| 2.5 HP | 24,000 – 25,000 BTU | 400 – 600 sq.ft (Large Hall) |
Factors that "Steal" your BTUs
When calculating, you must add more BTU if:
-
High Ceilings: More air volume requires more cooling power.
-
West-Facing Windows: Afternoon sun (West sun) adds a significant "heat load."
-
Kitchens: Heat from cooking appliances needs to be offset.
-
Occupancy: Every human body generates about 300–400 BTUs of heat.
